The Baal Shem Tov’s Teachings on the Torah

And Moses said to Aharon: Draw near to the altar . . . (Leviticus 9:7)

Rashi comments that Aharon was ashamed and afraid to draw near to the altar.1 Moses therefore said to him, “Why are you ashamed? You were chosen for this.”2

This is a surprising explanation. Just because he was chosen doesn’t mean that he should not be ashamed.

Rather, I heard from my grandfather [the Baal Shem Tov] this explanation: [Moses said,] “You were chosen because you feel fear and shame before G-d,”3 for “The sacrifices of G-d are a broken spirit” (Psalms 51:19).4

This idea has also been mentioned in the writings of the Arizal.5

Second day Rosh Chodesh Iyar
Today’s Torah reading is the double parshah of TAZRIA setting forth the laws of "leprous" marks on the skin of the body and the head and METZORA (Leviticus 14:1-15:33) concluding the Biblical laws of Tzora’at ("leprous" marks on the human skin and head, garments and houses) and the purification ritual. Special additional reading for Rosh Chodesh: Numbers 28:9-15; Haftara: Isaiah chapter 56.
After the afternoon service we read the second chapter of Pirkey Avot.
Today is the anniversary of Moses’ count of the Children of Israel in the Wilderness (Numbers 1:1) and the beginning of the building of the First Temple by King Solomon.

Attributes of the month of Iyar: Ruling permutation of the letters of HAVAYAH: YOD KEH KEH VAV, contained in the initial Hebrew letters of Yithalel Hamithalel Haskeil Veyado’a — "Let him that glories [glory in this, that] he knows and understands [Me]" (Jeremiah 9:23). The month’s corresponding letter is: VAV; Human attribute: THOUGHT; Body Part: RIGHT KIDNEY; Tribe: ISSACHAR; Constellation: SHOR (Taurus, the Ox). This month is particularly conducive to deep contemplation and understanding. It is also conducive to healing since all the sick among the Children of Israel who left Egypt were completely healed in this period in preparation for the Giving of the Torah. Thus the Hebrew name of the month of Iyar is made up of the letters Aleph-Yud-Reish, the initial letters of the Hebrew words Ani YKVK Rophecha, "I HaShem am your Healer" (Exodus 15:26).

• "Any rains that fall during the month of Iyar are a great remedy for all sicknesses — there is no remedy like them in all the drugstores. It is good to stand in the rain and bare one’s head a little and open one’s mouth to the rain" (The Ohev Yisrael of Apta). •

Israel Independence Day commemorating Israel’s Declaration of Independence on 5 Iyar 5708 / May 14 1948. This is an occasion for giving thanks to the Almighty for His mercies and for careful thought and introspection about what should be our true pathway combined with earnest prayer that we should quickly find and pursue it.
Today is 30 days before the Festival of Shavuot, and it is customary to commence the study of the laws of the coming festival thirty days in advance.

Shabbat ACHAREY-KEDOSHIM
This Shabbat we read the double portion of ACHAREI covering the laws of Yom Kippur and the Torah incest prohibitions, and KEDOSHIM giving the essential "heart" of the Torah code of law including the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. Haftara: Amos 9:7–15 (Ashkenazi custom) Ezekiel 20:2–20 (Sefardi custom).
Pirkey Avot chapter 3 is read after the Shabbat afternoon Minchah service.

The hidden tzadik and mekubal, R’Yosef Dayan zt’l

     In the year 1960, two students came to Rabbi Patilon, a well known miracle man and kabalist, to invite him to join them in their special trip to Meron (the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai). Rabbi Patilon listened to their words, and immediately answered, “I can see now a man on the level of an angel, sitting by the tomb of Beniyahu Ben Yehoyada (see Shmuel II 8). On his head is a beret hat, and he is wearing “Chaki” (beige) pants. In his hands is a book of kavanos and he is unifying yichudim (a form of kabalistic meditation based on different permutations and combinations of the Divine names and attributes of G-d). If you promise me that you will also travel to the tomb of Beniyahu Ben Yehoyada I will join you, because I know that he intends to stay there until next week and I would like to see him up close.
 
This was the beginning of the revealing of the hidden tzadik Rabbi Yosef Dayan. The well know Kabalist, Rabbi Yitchak Kaduri zt’l said of him, “I know for a fact that he is one of the 36 hidden tzadikim…”.
 
Rabbi Yosef Dayan was one of the most unusual personalities in our times. He studied under the legendary kabalist Rabbi Mordechai Sharabi and then found in himself a talent for doing tikunim (rectifications using prayers, torah study, and yichudim).
 
He spent a tremendous amount of time at tombs of ancient tzaddikim throughout the land of Israel and there did the tikunim appropriate for each place, his purpose was to arouse the merit of the tzadikim to benefit the Jewish people. Sometimes he spent months in one place totally absorbed in his learning/tikunim/prayers and eating only local vegetation. A few of these places were amongst hostile Arabs which tried to attack him, but he always managed to defeat them sometimes while outnumbered by 50 to 1 and sometimes by a clear miracle.
 
Some of these tombs’ locations were unknown and he, with divine help, was able to find them. One time while searching unsuccessfully for a lost tomb on a mountainous terrain, he suddenly slipped and rolled quite a distance crashing into vegetation. He quickly got up saying the verse “a tzadik falls seven times and rises..” (Mishlei 24:17). Then he saw hidden by the vegetation he fell into, the entrance to a cave. This was the tomb he was looking for.
 
He had a special talent in the area of tikunim and was considered singular in the generation. He was even capable of sensing whether his tikunim had the desired effects in the spiritual worlds.
 
For example, Reb Yosef spent some time doing tikunim for his Rebbi in Kabala, Rav Mordechai Sharabi. In the middle of the tikunim, he suddenly stopped and started working on other problems. One of his closest students, asked why he is praying for such and such a person and not for Rav Sharabi? Reb Yosef answered him an unclear answer. The student did not let go and with great insistence pushed to know the real answer. Then Reb Yosef answered him, “I strengthened myself in prayer, I toiled tremendously in supplications. I cried out on high and tried to break the great barrier which separates between us and our Father in heaven, but it was for nothing. I did not succeed in finding even the tinyest crack. Then I understood that it is a gezera (heavenly decree) from heaven and it is impossible to annul it.. therefore I stopped.
 
Although each tomb had a special tikun to be done as brought down in the writings of the Arizal, the place he sensed to be the best for his prayers and tikunim was the tomb of Shmuel HaNavi. He went there at least weekly, and even had revelations from the Prophet Shmuel himself.
 
After he became more known, he would bring a minyan of people to the tomb of Shmuel Hanavi every thursday night for his order of prayer, learning, and tikunim. When people approached him with their problems, he would often tell them to join him in his weekly trips to the tomb of Shmuel HaNavi.
 
One time, a certain teenager lost his father. The teenager became increasingly closed in emotionally and quickly lost all his friends. To make matters worse, every yeshiva he tried to get in to refused to accept him on grounds that he would not fit into the yeshiva’s program. Although, one yeshiva accepted him, he did not succeed in keeping the yeshiva’s program and was out after a few days. His story came to Rabbi Yosef Dayan who had mercy on him and invited him to join him in prayer every thursday night until the decree will be changed. The teenager joined Rav Yosef for one month until one day Rav Yosef told him, “That’s it. The matter is changed in heaven. From now you will see that everything will be ok.” And so it was.
 
Another time, an excellent student who had a severe stuttering problem since childhood was looking to get married. However due to his stuttering time after time, the prospective girl would turn down the shiduch. The student was broken spirited and was advised to go to Reb Yosef. Reb Yosef advised him to join him in the prayers at the tomb of Shmuel HaNavi and that after a while everything would be ok. He joined and after 4 months he was able to speak completely normally.
 
Another time, a yeshiva student who wanted to get married went to him asking for a bracha that he will merit to find a good shidduch. Reb Yosef looked deeply into the student and afterwards told him, “my friend, why are you in such a hurry to get married? What is better for you now is to sit diligently in the tent of torah, to learn well the tractates Bava Kama, Bava Metzia, and Bava Basra. After you are baki (proficient) in them, get married and you will bring kids always…”
 
The student was not looking for this answer. He was very surprised by the answer of Reb Yosef and sought advice from other Rabanim. They told him practical halacha to fulfill the positive biblical commandment to marry a woman. The student followed their advice and soon got married. After the first year, his wife gave birth to a son, but afterwards, she could not get pregnant. Many years passed and the woman still could not get pregnant. In his anguish he turned again to Reb Yosef for advice. Reb Yosef answered him, “if you had listened to me back then, you would have saved yourself all this anguish because your tikun was in learning those three tractates I told you…But you did not understand me and did not follow my advice which came from a deep probe into the root of your soul and the tikun of your mida of yesod. Now it is extremely difficult to straighten the bent.”
 
Rabbi Yosef Waltach was also a hidden tzadik and a close friend of Rabbi Yosef Dayan. One time, one of the students of the yeshiva Porat Yosef in Jerusalem, met Rabbi Waltach one the street as Rav Waltach was headed towards the home of Rabbi Yosef Dayan. The student, eager to hear these two tzadikim converse in torah secrets, followed him to Rabbi Dayan’s house. When they arrived Rabbi Waltach sat down and opened the conversation. The conversation centered on the Arab countries and their bad qualities – prosecuting, negative words on the syrians, and the bad midos found often among the egyptians population. This one spoke and the other would add.., and each of the two tzadikim would add and go into detail as to the bad deeds of the arabs. They then went into great detail on each Arab province and its inhabitants.
 
The student was thoroughly amazed at the conversation. He hoped for words of torah but heard only accusations against the enemies of Israel. He knew that the words of tzadikim are not useless chatter on politics rather certainly there must be some reason. Therefore he guarded the matter. Soon later, the war of Yom Kippur suddenly broke out with Syria on the northern front and Egypt in the south. The war was the hardest one for Israel and was almost lost. Then, the student understood what had happened. The two tzadikim saw with Ruach HaKodesh the war (and were not allowed to reveal it). They tried to arouse a katigora (accusations) in heaven on the Arabs in order to foil their evil thoughts.
 
PRAYER AND SHEMIRA HABRIS
 
Rabbi Waltach would say that the power of Reb Yosef Dayan lay in that he had never blemished his bris (see end of article).
 
Rabbi Yosef would say “He who is plagued with forgetting, this comes from the sitra achra (side of evil) having attached itself to him. The sitra achra enclothes itself in him due to lack of shemiras habris and damaging the mida of yesod. The verse says “do not stray after your hearts and after your eyes…in order that you remember” (bamidbar 15). When you don’t stray after your heart and eyes, then the holiness of the bris is guarded properly then it’s possible to merit “remembrance” (i.e. perfect memory). He who wants to merit remembrance should repent completely and say the great vidui.
 
A man who prays for something. He should continue to say the request in the same words all the time. Any change in the wording of the request will create difficulties in the acceptance of the prayer. It is recommended when requesting something in prayer to ask for only one thing, and not many requests. This is like the talmudic saying “if you grab alot you have not grabbed (anything)”.
 
Reb Yosef was asked: “One who is full of sins, is it permitted for him to go to the tombs of tzadikim?” answer: “Of course, it is permitted for one like this to prostrate before the tomb of the tzadik. Even for one who did much damage and is in the category of father of fathers of impurity and a great klipa (evil forces) surrounds him, he can come and not be concerned on any matter.” The asker continued, “Should such a person immerse first (in a mikve)?” answer: “no need for immersing! Rather he should go to the gravestone of the tzadik and in the tzadik’s merit he will merit to rectify himself and remove the klipos from him, but only if the tomb of the tzadik is secluded, and not surrounded by other tombs.”
 
Reb Yosef would be very careful to say before our Father in heaven the requests in clear words, and to explain as fitting the request. One Jew needed an apartment and he prayed to G-d in the following way “Master of the World send me money to buy an apartment”. Reb Yosef who was near him and heard his request said to him, “this is not a proper request. Think and see, if a man has alot of money and he wants to live in a specific neighborhood, all his money won’t help him if there won’t be in that neighborhood a good apartment for sale. Rather, understand that you need to explain in your prayer, “Ribono shel Olam (Master of the world) please help me to acquire a good and proper apartment in such and such a neighborhood.” Now, if your request is accepted, and such and such apartment is now designated for you, then certainly the money will also reach you in order to buy it since the apartment was designated for you from Heaven.

The laws of Hashem I will relate to you

1.   Hashem created the world and is its master too
2.   He is one and there is no other to compare
3.   Through Mitzvos, Hashem we will come to love and revere

4.   With awe and fear of Hashem our service we will elevate
5.   Through Tefila, with Hashem we will communicate
6.   Among Tzadikim we will keep our presence habitually
7.   When we swear it will be in Hashem’s name exclusively

8.   By emulating Hashem’s deeds and manners, our lives we will glorify
9.   Even as our world is being torn apart, His name we will sanctify
10.   Evenings and mornings we will accept Hashem’s kingdom as Shema we recite
11.   The voices of men and boys in his Torah will delight

12.   Tefillin will crown our head held on high
13.   Hashem’s seal of wisdom around our arms we will tie
14.   Tzitzis on the four corners of our garments will help us remember the Mitzvos well
15.   A Mezuzah we will place on the door of every house in which we dwell

16.   Men, women, and children, assemble after the Shmita, Torah from the king they will hear
17.   Wherever the king goes on his arm a Sefer Torah he should wear
18.   Every Jew his own Sefer Torah he should write
19.   Bless Hashem after every meal in which you satisfy your appetite

20.   A special house for Hashem we should build
21.   When we enter, with respect and fear we should be filled
22.   The Bais Hamikdash, a guard of Kohanim and Levi’im should constantly surround
23.   In it the Levi’im should serve with song and beautiful sound

24.   Before doing the service a Kohen must wash his feet and hands
25.   A Menorah, lit every day in the Bais Hamikdash stands
26.   The entire nation, every day the Kohanim should bless
27.   On the Shulchan, Lechem Hapanim and spices should always rest

28.   The incense offered in the morning and night smelled so nice
29.   Each day on the Mizbei’ach fresh wood to keep the fire burning should be put twice
30.   Piles of ash each morning from the Mizbeiach must be taken away
31.   Outside the Bais Hamikdash we must send anyone who is Tamei

32.   We will treat Kohanim the princes of Hashem with the special honor they deserve
33.   Special clothing they will don in the Bais Hamikdash when they serve
34.   To carry the Aron Kodesh the Kohanim Hashem did appoint
35.   With special oil Kohanim Gedolim and kings we will anoint

36.   Each week a different group of Kohanim should serve in a manner that is orderly

The 613 Mitzvos are the centerpiece of our heritage, our purpose in the world, and the creation of man and the world surrounding him. In the spirit of Shavuos we will introduce The Shirei HaMitzvos, a poem by Rav Yehonoson Eibushitz on all the Taryag Mitzvos. Each line of the song describes in poetic fashion one of the Taryag Mitzvos. The mitzvos in this work are listed according to the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Rambam first the 248 mitzvos Aseh and then the 365 mitzvos Lo Saaseh.

Aside from the beautiful verses that make this poem a masterpiece, the structure of the poem is laid out in a fascinating manner. Rav Yehonoson Eibushitz divides the mitzvos into seven (88 mitzvos per section) to correspond to the seven days of the weeks. He suggests saying one section everyday enabling the reader to go through all Taryag Mitzvos every week. It is said that there is a special Kabalistic Segula for Parnassa to say it at the table during your meal.

Each day’s poem is done in a different order of the Aleph Bais with each four lines beginning with the same letter. So for example the first 88 mitzvos are ordered in a simple ascending Aleph Bais. The verses for each of the first four mitzvos begin with the letter Aleph. The next four begin with the letter Bais. By time you have gone through the 22 letters letter of the Aleph Bais you have covered the first day’s mitzvos; all 88 of them. Each day follows this same theme only the order of the Aleph Bais changes. The second day uses “At Bash” where the order is the Aleph then Tuf, then Bais then Shin, and so on. Seven days, Seven orders, all Taryag Mitzvos. Check it out. It is a worthwhile project to go through on Shavuos.

     The Baal Shem Tov’s LETTER that describes his “ascent of the soul” on Rosh Hashana is one of the few original writings of the founder of Chassidus that has survived. The LETTER was written during the last years of the Baal Shem Tov’s life to his brother-in-law, the Torah scholar of repute, Rabbi Avraham Gershon of Kitov, who had immigrated to the Holy Land. However, for some reason, the LETTER was never delivered. Thus, Rabbi Gershon Kitover’s loss was posterity’s gain. The precious document remained in the Baal Shem Tov’s immediate circle until its publication some 30 years later in Ben Poras Yosef, a collection of Chassidic discourses by Rabbi Yaakov Yosef HaKohen of Polonoye. The LETTER also appears as the first entry in Kesser Shem Tov (Crown of a Good Name, 1794), Rabbi Aharon HaKohen of Zhelikhov’s classic anthology of the Baal Shem Tov’s teachings gleaned from the works of Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Polonoye.

     The LETTER bespeaks the mystical experiences to which its author was privy, as well as the directness, intimacy, and emotional warmth with which he related to family members and disciples alike. Its contents attest to two central points of the Baal Shem Tov’s legacy: the belief that the dissemination of his unique path of divine service is of Messianic import; and that it was (and is) the Baal Shem Tov’s mission to bring the mystical dimension of Jewish religious practice to the entire Jewish people, from the greatest Torah scholar to the humblest untutored laborer. (It should be mentioned in passing that this refutes the idea, recently advanced, that the Baal Shem Tov was simply a “private mystic” of a fairly conventional type.) To a great extent, the former goal has been accomplished by the various Chassidic leaders who succeeded the Baal Shem Tov; however, the fulfillment of the latter remains something of a mystery.

     Although many of the Baal Shem Tov’s values and concepts have been instilled in a broad spectrum of the Jewish religious community – in particular, the striving to increase in ahavas Yisrael, to serve G_d with joy and a whole heart, and to regard the spiritual life as a privilege and not a burden – his mystical practices, for the most part, seem to have “fallen through the cracks.” Most Chassidim today may be religiously devout, but not much more concerned with mysticism than their non-Chassidic peers. Nevertheless, when one explores the spectrum of Chassidic teachings, the experiential aspect of the Baal Shem Tov’s path still may be discerned.

     Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, the Baal Shem Tov’s great-grandson, advocated hisbodedus, secluded personal meditation and prayer, ideally practiced in the fields or forests at night for an hour or more. It is known that the Baal Shem Tov used to practice hisbodedus regularly. Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi and his successors in the Chabad Chassidic dynasty taught hisbonenus, a unique method of guided contemplation that can open the gates of higher perception. The Komarno tradition takes a more liberal stance toward the use of kavanos (“intentions”) and yichudim (“unifications”), two categories of Kabbalistic techniques formulated by the sixteenth century master Rabbi Yitzchak Luria, known as the holy Ari. In more recent times, Rabbi Kolonymus Kalman of Piacetzna included meditation and visualization practices as part of his highly original Chassidic teachings. Although the Piacetzna Rebbe perished in the Holocaust, his manuscripts miraculously survived, and have been birth to a regeneration of Chassidic spirituality that transcends any one group or community.

     To find proper guidance along any of these paths may be a challenge – but as the sages of the Talmud state of all those who strive to learn Torah: “If someone tells you, ‘I tried, but I did not succeed,’ do not believe him; if someone tells you, “I tried, and I succeeded,’ believe him!” (Megillah 6b). In the Breslov and Chabad communities there are qualified individuals who teach the practices of hisbodedus and hisbonenus; in Kabbalistic circles the kavannos and yichudim still are employed; and in both Brooklyn and Jerusalem, contemporary teachers have formulated their own more eclectic approaches, rooted in the path of the Baal Shem Tov. We look forward to the day when hisbodedus and such practices will be as commonplace as the daily prayer service. Then, at last, the Mashiach’s assurance to the Baal Shem Tov will be fulfilled.

THE LETTER

     To my beloved brother-in-law, my friend who is dear to me as my own heart and soul, the exalted rabbi and Chasid, renowned for his Torah scholarship and fear of Heaven, our master, Rabbi Avraham Gershon, may his light shine. Peace unto him and his family, his modest wife, Bluma, together with all their children; may they be blessed with life, amen, sela.

     I received the letter written by your holy hand, which you sent by means of the emissary from Jerusalem, at the fair of Luka in the year 5510 (1750 c.e.). It was written with extreme brevity, explaining that you had already written at length to each of us individually and had sent those letters by means of a certain man en route to Egypt. However, the letters never arrived, and I was sorely grieved that I never saw the work of your holy hand which was written in greater detail. Assuredly this is due to the calamitous state of the many lands in which the plague has spread because of our many transgressions. Not far from our region the pestilence has reached the holy community of Mohilev, as well as Wallachia and Turkey.

     [Your letter] also states that the Torah teachings and mystical revelations which I sent you through the rabbi and preacher of the holy community of Polonoye did not reach you; this, too, caused me great distress. It certainly would have given you great joy if they had reached you. I have since forgotten many [of those teachings]. However, the few details I still remember I will write to you in brief.

     On Rosh Hashanah of the year 5507 (1746 cue.), I made a [Kabalistic] oath and elevated my soul in the manner known to you. I saw wondrous things in a vision, the like of which I had never witnessed since the day my mind first began to awaken. The things which I saw and learned when I ascended there would be impossible to communicate, even if I could speak to you in person. When I returned to the lower Garden of Eden, I saw many souls, both living and dead, some known to me and others unknown-their number was beyond reckoning. They were hastening to and fro in order to ascend from one world to another through the Column known to those initiated into the Mysteries. Their joy was too great for the mouth to express or the physical ear to hear. Also, many evil-doers were repenting, and their sins were being forgiven, since it was a special time of Divine favor. Even to me, it was amazing how many of them were accepted as penitents, a number of whom you also know. There was great joy among them, too, and they ascended in he same manner.

     Together they begged and implored me unceasingly, “Because of the glory of your Torah, G_d has granted you an additional measure of understanding to grasp and to know these matters. Ascend with us so that you can be our help and support.”

     Because of the great joy that I beheld among them, I agreed to go up with them… And I besought my master (Achiyah HaShiloni) to accompany me, for the ascent to the Supernal Worlds is fraught with danger. From the day of my birth until now, I never experienced such an ascent as this.

     I went up from level to level until I entered the Palace of Moshiach, where Moshiach studies with the Tannaim and tzaddikim, as well as the Seven Shepherds. There I found extremely great rejoicing, but I did not know the cause of this delight. At first I thought that it might be due to my having passed away from the physical world, G_d forbid. Later they told me that I had not yet died, for they have great pleasure on high when I effect mystical unifications in the world below through their holy Torah. However, to this very day, the nature of their joy remains unknown to me.

     I asked Moshiach, “When will you come, master?” And he replied, “By this you shall know: it will be a time when your teachings become publicized and revealed to the world, and your well-springs have overflowed to the outside. [It will be when] that which I have taught you-and that which you have perceived of your own efforts-become known, so that others, too, will be able to perform mystical unifications and ascents of the soul like you. Then all the evil klippos will be destroyed, and it will be a time of grace and salvation.”

     I was amazed at this and greatly troubled, since a long time must pass for this to be possible. But while I was there I learned three segulos and three Holy Names which are easy to learn and explain. My mind was then set at ease, and I thought that with these teachings the people of my own generation might attain the same spiritual level and state as myself. They would be able to elevate their souls and to learn and perceive just as I do. However, I was not granted permission to reveal this during my lifetime. I pleaded for your sake to be allowed to teach you; but I was denied permission altogether and took an oath to that effect.

     Yet this I can tell you, and may G_d assist you, that your way may pleasant to the Lord, and that you do not go astray (particularly in the Holy Land). Whenever you pray or study-and with every utterance your lips-intend to bring about the unification of a Divine Name. For every letter contains worlds and souls and G_dliness, and they ascend and combine and unite with one another. Then the letters combine and unite to form a word, and they are actually unified with the Divine essence-and in all these aspects, your soul is bound up with them. All [the worlds become unified as one, and they ascend and bring about great joy and delight without measure. Consider the joy of a bridegroom and bride in this lowly physical world, and you will realize how much greater is the joy on such a lofty spiritual level.

     G_d will surely help you. Wherever you turn, you will succeed and become enlightened. “Give wisdom to the wise, and he will become wise all the more.” Please pray for my sake, that I might be privileged to dwell in G_d’s land during my lifetime; and pray for the remnant of our people who still remain in the Diaspora.

     These are the words of your brother-in-law who longs to see you face-to-face, who prays that length of days be granted to you and your wife and children, and who wishes you peace “all your days-including the nights, for many good years, amen, sela.

The Ten Principles Of The Baal Shem Tov

     The following is a summary of the principles that the Baal Shem Tov taught his holy students. This precious text was found in the possession of a grandson of the Baal Shem Tov in Hamburg (copied from the holy handwriting of the Admor Moharash).

     1. The entire Torah and the entire world contain nothing but the light of the Infinite One (blessed be He) concealed within them. All the verses that speak of this, such as “there is no other than He” and “I fill the heavens and the earth,” are to be taken literally.

     There is no act, word or thought in which the essence of divinity is not constricted and hiding.

     And so when you look and see with your mind’s eye, you will see the inner, life-force aspect of everything, not just its outer, superficial layer. You will see nothing but the divine power inside all things that is giving them life, being and existence at every moment.

     And when you listen carefully to the inner voice within any physical sound that you hear, you will hear only the voice of G-d as, at that moment, it is literally giving life and existence to the sound that you are hearing.

     2. The “exile of G-d’s Presence” refers to the life-force and divine power that gives a person life and existence even at the moment that he is transgressing G-d’s will.

     3. The evil inclination and lust are agents of G-d. They carry out G-d’s will to mislead a person in order that he will overcome them.

     From them, you can learn to be as mighty as they are. Just as they never slacken in their work but are trying to destroy you day and night (because a person always desires what his eyes see and what his ears hear), just as they are happy and delighted to carry out G-d’s will, it should be as clear to you that G-d wants you to overcome them until you will conquer yourself and all your desires will be under your control–until you transform them to good.

     This idea is alluded to in the verse, “we will take from it [from the flock] to serve G-d” (Shmot 10:26), meaning that we will take a lesson from the evil inclination to act just as it acts to fulfill G-d’s will. And a word to the wise is sufficient.

     4. Having no [divine] source, evil does not come down from heaven. Nevertheless, evil that exists has an inner power giving it life. And this [inner power] is total goodness. So if you look at the inner aspect of evil, you will only see the good in it.

     5. A person has to cling to the words that he speaks. Because each word contains a soul and divinity, when you cling to them, you are connected to divinity.

     6. Everything that happens in the world, no matter how insignificant, comes from G-d. And so do not concern yourself with whether or not what has occurred is in accordance with your will.

     7. Neither thinking about the day of one’s death nor the fear of punishment in hell will arouse a person’s heart to serve G-d. But yearning to cling to the source of life and goodness will do so. And neither fasting nor afflicting oneself will be of any help. But forgetting oneself out of the depth of one’s yearning will do so.

     8. Every person in his own right is [essentially] a complete spiritual Torah. If he goes in G-d’s path, that [Torah] is absorbed into his being, according to his level.

     9. When a person prays for something that he needs, he should pray for the divine life-force hiding within that thing and giving it life, which is now suffering because of whatever it is lacking. And so one should ask G-d to have pity on His life force that is hidden in that thing.

     10. G-d’s Providence extends to all created beings, even to inanimate objects and plants. There is nothing that is not viewed from above in every detail. Everything was made with a particular intent. And a word to the wise is sufficient.

Blessing the month of Iyar: After the Torah reading, we bless the coming month of IYAR. The Molad (junction of the sun and the moon) will be on Friday night April 24 at 8:07 and 2 chalakim.

Pirkey Avot: On each of the six Shabbatot from today until before the festival of Shavuot celebrating the giving of the Torah, it is customary to recite one of the six chapters of the Mishnaic tractate Pirkey Avot containing the ethical wisdom of the sages since Derech Eretz ("the way of the earth", good manners) is the foundation of the Torah. Today we start with Chapter One.

Today is the anniversary of the collapse of the walls of Jericho in the time of Joshua marking the beginning of the conquest of the Land of Israel. It is good to devote special attention to the thrice-daily repeated Aleinu prayer, which was composed by Joshua after that miracle in the form of a backwards acrostic on his name. The recital of Alenu is a segulah (propitious remedy) against all troubles.

Thursday 23 April / 29 Nissan
Although today is the eve of Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) it is not customary to fast or hold the usual Yom Kippur Katan (the "small" day of atonement) since we are still in Nissan, month of redemption, when fasting (except for the Fast of the Firstborn) is not appropriate.

Thursday night-Friday 23-24 April /30 Nissan
First day of Rosh Chodesh Iyar

Yahrzeit of Rabbi Chaim Vital (1543-1620), leading student of R. Yitzchak Luria ("ARI") and chief expositor of his kabbalistic system.

Attributes of the month of Iyar: Ruling permutation of the letters of HAVAYAH: YOD KEH KEH VAV, contained in the initial Hebrew letters of Yithalel Hamithalel Haskeil Veyado’a — "Let him that glories [glory in this, that] he knows and understands [Me]" (Jeremiah 9:23). The month’s corresponding letter is: VAV; Human attribute: THOUGHT; Body Part: RIGHT KIDNEY; Tribe: ISSACHAR; Constellation: SHOR (Taurus, the Ox). This month is particularly conducive to deep contemplation and understanding. It is also conducive to healing since all the sick among the Children of Israel who left Egypt were completely healed in this period in preparation for the Giving of the Torah. Thus the Hebrew name of the month of Iyar is made up of the letters Aleph-Yud-Reish, the initial letters of the Hebrew words Ani YKVK Rophecha, "I HaShem am your Healer" (Exodus 15:26).

Today’s Torah reading is the double parshah of TAZRIA setting forth the laws of "leprous" marks on the skin of the body and the head and METZORA (Leviticus 14:1-15:33) concluding the Biblical laws of Tzora’at ("leprous" marks on the human skin and head, garments and houses) and the purification ritual. Special additional reading for Rosh Chodesh: Numbers 28:9-15; Haftara: Isaiah chapter 56.

After the afternoon service we read the second chapter of Pirkey Avot.
Today is the anniversary of Moses’ count of the Children of Israel in the Wilderness (Numbers 1:1) and the beginning of the building of the First Temple by King Solomon.

All medicines come from the earth. Therefore during the season when the earth gives forth her bounty and puts strength into all the trees and plants, i.e. during the month of Iyar when the fruits ripen, all medicinal plants have greater power, because the earth then puts strength into them. However at other times, even if one were to take exactly the same medicines, they would not have the same power. This is why people take medicines in the month of Iyar – May.
